lyrics

This land now called Virginia is my home
And when I die it’s where they’ll put my bones
Before the civil war, before columbus touched the shore
This land was known by many different names

Before this land was ever owned or claimed
Before this land was never owned or claimed
Then things done in the name of God wrought evil and brought shame
And once Tsenocomoco was the name

Well I grew up in the shadow of Bull Run
Enslaved humans died under the sun
And on those hills where blood was spilled I’ve walked and come undone
But we must face and speak it all to overcome

I guess it’s fitting that I wind up in this town
Though I pray it’s not too late to turn around
For if this ship should stay the course she’ll surely run aground
For the rocks are sharp and many all around

It’s getting easier to say this world ain’t home
It’s getting easier to say I just don’t know
But for the time we’ve got down here let’s treat it like our own
Glory glory when we lay these burdens down

Sing hallelujah on the day they lay me down
