Canyonlands

Blankets of rain on the horizon red rocks and desert sage
Plateau wide and endless and the sun across the clay
It’s a hard wind blowin’ so tie down the covered load
Move past the gated fences way out on the open road again
It’s a hundred miles to Moab following the power lines
In the distance lighting flashes
On the highway the engine whines
Once again it’s southbound Utah
Under a blue and orange sky
Where the hills rise in defiance of the winding railway line
The railway line
That rain looks like a typhoon from fifteen miles out
And it casts so great a shadow
Underneath the mushroom cloud
And that water tower is lonely
Keeping watch over this ghost town
Mercy rises with the morning
Come and lay your burden down, your burden down
Come and lay your burden, lay your burden down

Midnight Train
04:36
|
|||
Well I’m headed up to Boston mama
Sometime in the fall
First time since I been back home
I’ve traveled North at all
I’m headed up to Boston
When the leaves begin to change
For to see that darling girl
I’m leaving on a midnight train
You know me I’m from Virginia
That’s where I was born and raised
Grew up to be a traveling man
But my heart has always stayed
Back home and down in Carolina
Near the Carteret County line
Heard she was from Fredonia
Still put her hand in mine
Said I’m not sure of where I’m going girl
But I sure know where I’ve been
Still got some things I carry
And I hope you can understand
Well I’m headed up to Boston mama
Sometime in the fall
First time since I been back home
I’ve traveled North at all
I’m headed up to Boston
When the leaves begin to change
For to see that darling girl
I’m leaving on a midnight train
I said its been awhile darlin’
So I’m not sure where to start
‘Cause there’s a little girl north of the Detroit line
Who already stole my heart
But I sure do feel things for you
That much I can say
And that’s more than I’ve said to anyone
In more than a thousand days
Well I’m headed up to Boston mama
Sometime in the fall
First time since I been back home
I’ve traveled North at all
I’m headed up to Boston
When the leaves begin to change
For to see that darling girl
I’m leaving on a midnight train

Meaningless
04:25
|
|||
Times past I knew a man
The richest in the land
His eyes were weak his hands were cold
Sitting on his throne he called me
Young servant please come here
You’re all I’ve got now and I’m old
Your heart is truly humble
You’ve always served me well
So let me tell you what I’ll do
‘Cause I’ve worked my whole life for this
And I’ve no one of my own
So now I give it all to you
Meaningless!
Everything is meaningless
There’s nothing new under the sun
You’ll find that you have been
Chasing after the wind
When it all is said and done
All I have toiled for
I can enjoy no more
Can’t take it with me when I go
For I shall soon be taken
Under this heavy moon
And still it pains me just to know
I’ve wasted years in searching
To satisfy my soul
My passion foolishly misplaced
For wisdom wealth and pleasure
I sacrificed my love
These things I say to my disgrace
Meaningless!
Everything is meaningless
There’s nothing new under the sun
You’ll find that you have been
Chasing after the wind
When it all is said and done
Come near to listen
Come near to listen
Rather than to offer up
The sacrifice of fools
The old man laid his head down
With is last fading breath
He looked me right in my eyes
And this is what he said
May you be joyful always
Outside of circumstance
That you might worship truly
May your spirit dance
And make it your ambition to live a quiet life
Learn to work with your hands and love your wife
Go eat your food with gladness go drink your wine with joy
Go love your precious daughter and your darling little boy
Meaningless!
Everything is meaningless
There’s nothing new under the sun
You’ll find that you have been
Chasing after the wind
When it all is said and done

Flowers in Montana
04:25
|
|||
The days are gettin longer since you left here
Sometimes I cant find the words to say
You’re gettin to the age where you’ll remember
And I take comfort in that fact now everyday
Well I know its hard at times for you without me
Believe me I know loneliness myself
When the days get short and it seems that there's more darkness than there is light
There's only one place that I go to find some help
But the flowers in Montana all are bloomin
And the river by the mountain is clear and cold
And the flower on my arm will stay forever
I’m not a young man but I’ve never felt so old
So even when the mountains shake and tremble
Even when my time on earth is done
When they throw my bones alone deep into red dirt
Just remember that I’m going to the Son
And the flowers in Montana all are bloomin
And the river by the mountain is clear and cold
And the flower on my arm will stay forever
I’m goin yonder where the streets are paved with gold
So keep the fire burning till the morning
Stoke the embers with the words that I say to you
Wrap yourself in grace and woven blankets
Wrap yourself in sorrow for the ghosts that tell the truth
Cause the flowers in Montana all are bloomin
And the river by the mountain is clear and cold
And the flower on my arm will stay forever
I’m goin yonder where the streets are paved with gold
I’m goin yonder where the streets are paved with gold

Until the Day
04:07
|
|||
Fall in Virginia won’t you hold me tight
Carry me through to the morning light
Tell me darlin is this right
Lord touch these eyes and give me sight
Let me hear you say ‘It can be found, it can be found’
On another day in another town, another town
I hear you calling from the trees
‘What will be my love will be’
But let the mountains fall in the sea
Lord take this all away from me
Let me hear you say ‘Oh come unbound, son come unbound’
‘To meet the day, don’t stay down, you can’t stay down’
So dark it’s been for all these years
Living alone with all my fears
Show me the smoke and all the mirrors
Or will this illusion keep me here?
Though I can hardly breathe
I’m howlin at the moon
And if I ever see you again
It’d be too soon
So go ahead and put me to the test
‘Cause I’ll pack my bags and head out West
I feel you tight and in my chest
Lord lay me down and let me rest
Until the day comes around it comes around
When I will lay buried in the ground deep in the ground
Until the day

Richmond City Blues
03:07
|
|||
South of the river
Richmond city blues
Sittin in jail girl
Thinkin bout you
Sittin in jail lord
Sittin in jail
Ain’t got nobody
For to go my bail
Down in the bottom
In the bottom so low
Late in the evening
I can hear the train blow
Hear the train blow
Hear the train blow
Late in the evening
Lord I hear the train blow
That train won't stay love
She’s blowin right through
It'll be gone girl
And so will you
Before you go girl
For old times sake
Put your arms around me
Lord and feel my heart break
Roses love sunshine
Violets love dew
Heaven above knows
‘Bout these Richmond city blues
Well I ain't got no coat girl
I ain't got no shoes
Heaven above knows
‘Bout these Richmond city blues

Strong Constitution
05:25
|
|||
When she was a young girl in old Caroline
In a house with the brightest of blues
She wore a faded old dress with a white rose design
And bright pair of ruby red shoes
She'd listen, she'd tell and she'd give us boys hell
If ever we strayed from what's right
She was tough but sincere, never showed any fear
She never backed down from a fight
She's got a strong constitution and steel in her spine
With a spirit more precious than jewels
She's got a strong constitution, shes made up her mind
She won't take no shit from a fool
She grew up strong never doing much wrong
Till her whole world went up into flames
When her daddy walked out she spun into doubt
She cursed when she cried out your name
Put it up on a shelf
She’s so hard on herself
She wandered away far from home
And it still tears me up when I drink from that cup
To think of her out there so lost and alone
And her strong constitution
That put steel in her spine with a spirit more precious than jewels
She started second guessing
And it fucked with her mind
She started to break her own rules
Till one day with grace
Light returned to her face
I caught it when she smiled at me
With truth and with love
And with help from above
She's the woman she always meant to be
Stronghearted and brave
With a faith that could save
Even such wretches as we
She's got a strong constitution and steel in her spine
With a spirit more precious than jewels
She's got a strong constitution, shes made up her mind
She won't take no shit from a fool

Kathleen Jean
03:43
|
|||
She was born in San Antonio Texas
She lived most her life in Virginny-i-a
She could sew you a pair of pants and make you some breakfast
And she'd take you down to church every Sunday
Kathleen Jean
Virginia queen
With a laugh so damn infectious have you splitting at your seams
Kathleen Jean
Virginia Queen
Got a direct line up to heaven
At least that’s the way it seems
Well she married up to a lean black haired guitar man
They had seven kids before he hit the road
She says the Lord helped her keep it together
Else they'd all be in jail or dead I do suppose
Kathleen Jean
Virginia queen
With a laugh so damn infectious have you splitting at your seams
Kathleen Jean
Virginia Queen
Got a direct line up to heaven
At least that’s the way it seems
She was a hundred percent spitfire, but I was double
And I scared her half to death at least twice a day
Growin up me and the boys weren’t nothing but trouble
Just dumb and young but she loved us anyway

Free and Homeward
03:45
|
|||
Ridin into West Virginia putting as many miles as I can
In between these mountains and the heart of a dyin man
Early in the morning the rooster crowed but I was gone
Runnin fast from that risin sun though I knew I’d done no wrong
I’d done no wrong…
Overtook me up at Harpers Ferry where they hung Ol’ John Brown
Near the railroad line beneath the bluffs I stood out on open ground
They had me surrounded from the North, South, East and West
Two pearl-handled pistols I drew slowly from my vest
Said “I ain’t got a mind to kill no man, if you’ll leave me on my own”
They just laughed, said “listen boy, you know we come here to take you home”
But that’s not my home.
So my thumbs pulled back the hammers. I knew what must be done.
But I felt no peace within my soul for I’d never killed no one
I looked up those mountain walls and saw a hawk soarin to the sky
Free and homeward towards the sun and I closed both my eyes
And I remembered the story of Jericho.
Of battles won when no hope was found.
And I prayed to the Lord for a miracle and those rocks came falling down
Lord falling down. Falling down.
My body lays there to this day / Buried beneath the stone
But have no pity on my soul / For I am free and I am home

On the Run
04:53
|
|||
Smoke on the water rising next to me
Far bank of the river is all I see
Blood washes my body and makes me clean
But I ain’t turnin back I’m dying free
Well it’s cactus clay and rust on every side
And it’s chrome and steel and the throttle open wide
This highway runs for a thousand miles
So it’s payphone booths and bathroom tiles
Tearin through the desert with a loaded gun
I ride the day and I ride the night
Heading for the border in the morning light
I’m on the run
I rode west from Virginia to Tennessee
And I put Arkansas and Oklahoma behind me
I hid out in Albuquerque for three whole weeks
Till the things I done come calling after me
Now it’s a hot sun beatin down and no time for shade
My senses tuned and sharper than a razor blade
It’s a hurricane lamp and kerosene
And it’s cigarettes and its gasoline
A southwest Texas border on the run
Well I ride the day and I ride the night
Screamin through the desert in the pale moonlight
I’m on the run
In a cheap hotel under a different name
I got the shade pulled tight behind the window pane
But my minds grown so tired of this game
Gotta go gotta hit the road gotta break these chains
Well I’ll be alright if I can make it to the Rio Grande
And I’ll disappear deep on down to Mexicoland
But if I don’t make the river I’m as good as dead
And the buzzards will be circling above my head
Barbed wire, fire, sirens and a smoking gun
Well I gave my all I did my best
Now the fires burning deep inside my left side chest
I’m on the run
